What is Taoism?

A human tool, not a rulebook

What is Taoism?

If you have never encountered Taoism before, it may sound like an impenetrable religion full of mysticism. But in its purest form, Taoism is above all a human tool – a practical method created by people, for people. It arose in China over 2,500 years ago and offers a manual for living with the least possible suffering and the greatest possible inner peace.

In the West we are used to religions that dictate rigid laws under threat of punishment. Taoism works completely differently. It is more like a natural GPS system. The universe's GPS does not judge you for taking a wrong turn or a detour. It gives no moral lectures. It simply shows you what the landscape looks like and offers the smoothest way forward – from exactly where you are right now.

Taoism is about learning to read this built-in map, so that we can stop colliding with reality and start surfing its waves instead.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.Daodejing, chapter 64
Reflection

Where in your life does it feel like you are 'colliding with reality' right now – struggling against something that won't yield?

Today's practice

Notice one single situation today where you tense up unnecessarily. Just notice it – nothing more.
