Trust and surrender

Accept what already is

Trust and surrender

Many confuse surrender with giving up. In Taoism it means something completely different: accepting reality exactly as it is right now, without wasting energy wishing it were otherwise.

When you fight reality ('It SHOULDN'T be raining!', 'They SHOULDN'T have said that!') you lose every time – one hundred percent of the time. The rain keeps falling no matter how angry you get.

Your flight is cancelled. The un-Taoist way: yell at the staff, spike your blood pressure, ruin your day. The Taoist way: take a deep breath, acknowledge the situation and calmly ask: 'What are my options now?' Acceptance comes first – then the wise decision.

Reflection

What in your life are you fighting although it is already a fact? What would acceptance set free?

Today's practice

At the next obstacle today, say quietly: 'It is what it is. What is the next natural step from here?'
